Discrete-Time Signals, Amplitude and Frequency

We are interested in the manipulation and/or the synthesis of audio signals. Because we work with computers, these signals are discretized by uniformly sampling them in time and quantizing their amplitudes to discrete levels. The following sections briefly address the sampling process, units of signal amplitude, different ways of controlling signal amplitudes (or other parameters) over time, and how to determine equal-tempered semitone frequencies and MIDI numbers.
