One particular approach to analysis/resynthesis, first developed in the late 1980s, is called spectral modeling synthesis (SMS).
The SMS technique is similar to additive synthesis in the sense that spectral peaks are tracked and parameterized over time using the STFT.
The spectral energy that remains once these peaks are identified and removed is subsequently approximated by white noise that is processed through a time-varying filter.
