Sampling

Audio sampling refers to the acquisition and storage of sounds for subsequent manipulation and playback. The creation of musical compositions using recorded sounds goes back to the work of Pierre Schaeffer in the early 1940s, an approach referred to as musique concrète. Schaeffer used magnetic tape as the storage medium. Nowadays, the storage and processing of recorded sounds is primarily accomplished with computers.
