Infrared Distance Sensors
Infrared (IR) sensors consist of an LED that emits an IR signal and an IR detector that changes value in the presence of an IR signal.
IR proximity devices, such as the Sharp GP2G12, contain both the emitter and detector in the same housing.
These devices output a variable voltage proportional to proximity that can be read directly from an analog pin of the Arduino.
IR proximity sensors are designed to work in specific distance ranges. Accuracy may degrade for dark objects and/or with varying light conditions.
