The joystick that comes with your Arduino kit outputs two analog voltages corresponding to X and Y directional values, and also has a momentary “select” button that can be read with a digital pin on the Arduino.
The range of X and Y values is from 0 to 1023. When the joystick is in the rest position, it should output values for both X and Y of about 512.
